I thought of bringing to the notice of the participants of webmasters
that
the proposed new version of HTML - version 4.0 - will use UNICODE
as the character set. It is being designed to handle multi-lingual WWW.
The World-Wide-Web Consortium (W3C) has just released to the public
their working draft on this forthcoming HTML 4.0.
(The current HTML version 3.2 is uses Latin-1 (ISO 8859-1) as the
document character set).
The working draft is available (version 17th Sept 1997) under the URL
http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-html40/cover.html
The following are some extracts:
"HTML 4.0, the latest version of the Hypertext Markup Language used to
create World Wide Web pages, is based on Unicode. In technical terms,
the document character set of HTML 4.0 is Unicode. This important new
version of HTML, created by the HTML Working Group (WG) of the
World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), was announced by the W3C in
July 1997. ....."
"HTML 4.0 has been designed with the help of experts in the field of
internationalization, so that documents may be written in every language
and be transported easily around the world. This has been accomplished
by incorporating [RFC2070], which deals with the internationalization
of HTML.
One important step has been the adoption of the ISO/IEC:10646 standard
(identical to UNICODE]) as the document character set for HTML.
This is the world's most inclusive standard dealing with issues of the
representation of international characters, text direction, punctuation,
and other world language issues."
